Gillard calls surprise Sept 14 election in Australia

Australian prime minister Julia Gillard took the nation by surprise today by declaring that an election would be held on September 14.

The announcement breaks a convention in which the government usually gives little more than a month’s notice of an election.

Ms Gillard made the announcement during a speech to the National Press Gallery in Canberra.
