Thieves have boarded a boat on the southern Caribbean island of Curacao and stolen about 70 gold bars worth an estimated $11.5m (€8.8m).

Curacao police spokesman Reggie Huggins said the thieves assaulted the captain in the early-morning heist.

The captain and several others on board the Summerbliss are from the South American country of Guyana.

Police said there were six thieves and they made off with the gold in three cars. No suspects are in custody.

Mr Huggins declined to say who owned the boat or provide any details about the source of the gold.
