At least six people have been killed and 20 others injured in a car bomb blast in Iraq’s heartland Shiite province south of Baghdad, police and health officials said today.
A police officer said the parked car bomb targeted one of the gates to the city of Karbala, killing six civilians.
He added that several policemen were among the 20 wounded in the mid-morning attack.
The blast damaged a number of nearby buildings and cars.
A health official in a local hospital confirmed the casualty figure.
Karbala is 55 miles (90km) south of Baghdad. It is one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam and the place where the Prophet Mohammed’s grandson, Imam Hussein, is buried.
