An earthquake shook the Chilean capital today, causing people to flee into the streets, but there were no initial reports of damage.

An earthquake shook the Chilean capital today, causing people to flee into the streets, but there were no initial reports of damage.

The University of Chile said the quake had a magnitude of 5.7 and took place at 2.22pm local time (1722 GMT). It was centred about 50 miles (84km) from Santiago and 4 miles (6km) from the city of Los Andes.

A magnitude-8.8 quake and tsunami in central Chile in February 2010 killed more than 500 people.
