US dropout spared death penalty

A US college dropout has been spared the death penalty following a mass killing spree which left a congresswoman wounded.

Jared Loughner will instead face life in jail.

He admitted opening fire during a political event in Arizona in January last year.

Six people died while the 23-year-old's intended target Gabrielle Giffords was left with life-changing injuries.
