The British Foreign Secretary has said that Russia and China have turned their backs on the Syrian people.

It comes after both countries vetoed a UN resolution which called for sanctions against President Assad if he does not end the use of heavy weapons.

The Russian Ambassador to the U.N - Vitaly Churkin - in turn described William Hague's statement as "not elegant and very inaccurate".

He said that countries are trying to bulldoze the agreements through:

"Every conflict usually ends with some kind of a deal unless there is a rush for some kind of a total victory which would mean a very bloody conflict in Syria".
