30 killed in Bangladesh landslides

Landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains have killed at least 30 people in southern Bangladesh, rescuers said.

Government official Saiful Islam said rescuers are searching for bodies of several people missing since the slides late yesterday and early today.

The bodies of 30 adults and children have been recovered so far.

The slides occurred after three days of rain in the region. Huge chunks of earth and mud buried several flimsy huts at the foot of hills in Bandarban district.

The area is 155 miles south east of the capital, Dhaka.
