A man is critically ill in hospital with head injuries after an incident with a stun gun at a cattle market, police in Britain said today.

Officers were called to Darlington’s auction mart in Clifton Road by ambulance crew members attending the scene at around 9am.

The injured man, thought to be in his 40s, was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, with serious head injuries, a Durham Police spokesman said.

ā€œHis injuries were described as life-threatening,ā€ the spokesman said.

ā€œPolice are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident and a bolt gun, used to stun animals before slaughter, has been recovered from the scene.ā€

Officials at the market have closed the site and officers from the Health and Safety Executive have been informed.
