An official from Saudi Arabia's embassy in Bangladesh has been shot dead by unknown attackers, police and a news agency said today.

The United News of Bangladesh quoted Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Abdullah Al Bussairy as saying that Salha Al Salha was killed near his home in the capital, Dhaka.

The news agency said he was the second secretary at the Saudi Embassy.

Police official Kamrul Hasan told The Associated Press that police found Mr Al Salha with bullet wounds on a street in Dhaka's Gulshan residential area.

He said Mr Al Salha was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The motive for the attack is unclear and police are investigating.
