Eight people were killed as heavy rain and high winds lashed Mozambique over the weekend, emergency officials said today.

Manuel Machaieie, of the Disasters Management Institute, told Radio Mozambique that three people were killed yesterday when a tree fell on their homes in southern Mozambique’s Xai Xai district. State media said scores of homes and schools were destroyed.
