A magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook south western Siberia, the US Geological Survey reported.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quake that rattled the region at 6.16am Irish time, the agency said.

The quake was centred some 7.3 miles below the surface, the USGS said.

The USGS said the quake hit 62 miles east of Kyzyl, Russia and about 554 miles north west of Ulaanbator, Mongolia.
