Police in Guyana have detained a 14-year-old girl for allegedly lacing a family meal with pesticide after her parents forbade her from dating a 19-year-old neighbour.

Police Commander David Ramnarine said that the girl is suspected of poisoning a meal of curried fish and rice, leading to her parents and three siblings needing hospital treatment.
