Police were called to Hill Street in Toxteth, Liverpool, at 3.50pm yesterday after being called by neighbours.

Officers found a 19-year-old girl and her 60-year-old mother with stab wounds.

Both women were taken to hospital but the 19-year-old, named locally as Natalie O’Donoghue, was declared dead.

Police said the 60-year-old woman, named locally as Violet Burns, was in a “serious condition”.

A 50-year-old man from Toxteth, understood to be Violet Burn’s brother and Natalie’s uncle, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and is being questioned by detectives today.

Police said it was not yet clear what the motive was behind the attacks.
