Egypt polls will go ahead, says army

Egypt’s parliamentary elections will be held on schedule next week despite spreading unrest, the country’s military leaders said today.

The military also rejected protesters’ demands that it immediately step down, saying that doing so would amount to a “betrayal” of the people’s trust and arguing that the it took over from ousted president Hosni Mubarak by popular demand.
