Three people died in a 52-vehicle pile-up on a motorway in north-western Germany, police said.

Three people died in a 52-vehicle pile-up on a motorway in north-western Germany, police said.

The accident happened last night on the A31 autobahn near the town of Gronau, on Germany’s border with the Netherlands. The weather was foggy at the time but it wasn’t immediately clear what triggered the pile-up.

Police said 14 people were taken to nearby hospitals. Twenty-one people suffered minor injuries.
