Sydney: 100 elderly residents rescued from fire that kills three
Around 100 elderly people have been rescued from a blaze at a nursing home in Australia.
Fire ripped through the home in western Sydney, killing three elderly patients. Fourteen more are in intensive care.
Greg Mullins from the New South Wales Fire Service says crews had to crawl through flames to reach the victims.
"This is a firefighter's worst nightmare - elderly people who can’t get themselves out of harm's way," he said.
"There were dozens of firefighters in breathing apparatus working in thick black smoke where they couldn’t see their hands in front of their faces, so imagine what it was like for the elderly trying to escape."
