New Italian leader Mario Monti has formed a government without a single politician, picking bankers, diplomats and business executives in hope of ensuring escape from looming financial disaster.

The 68-year-old former European Union competition commissioner said he will be Italy’s economy minister as well as premier as he seeks to implement “sacrifices” to heal the country’s finances and set the economy growing again.
