Berlusconi's party backs Monti

Leaders of Silvio Berlusconi’s party have given their approval for economist Mario Monti to try to form a government, but say it can only last just long enough to implement measures to save Italy from financial disaster.

Angelino Alfano, head of the conservative party, said whether the party will actually support any Monti government depends on who is in the Cabinet and details of his programme.

Mr Alfano said no politicians who opposed Mr Berlusconi while the media mogul was in power should join the new government.

Italy’s president is expected to ask Mr Monti later this evening to try to assemble a government.

Mr Berlusconi reluctantly resigned yesterday after Italy came under severe market pressure to fix its ailing economy.
