Nearly four-fifths of Germans believe the euro will survive the financial crisis – and more than half think Chancellor Angela Merkel is doing a good job of handling it – according to a survey.

The ZDF television poll released today found 78% of respondents believe the euro will survive and 18% say it will not – roughly in line with last year’s findings.

The poll of 1,278 people conducted between Tuesday and Thursday showed 56% think Ms Merkel is doing a good job of crisis management and 33% say she is not.

A similar poll in October found Germans equally divided, with 45% approving of Ms Merkel’s management and 46% disapproving.

The margin of error was plus or minus three points.
