Palestinians admitted as full members to key UN agency

The Palestinians have won a vote to give them full membership of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

UNESCO is a UN agency which promotes collaboration and respect for justice, rule of law, and human rights.

Membership is seen a pre-cursor to joining the UN Security Council as a fully recognised state.

The US and Israel threatened to withdraw funding to UNESCO if it approved Palestinian membership.
