Tsunami concern as earthquake reported off Peru coast

A major 6.9 magnitude earthquake has struck along the coast of central Peru today.

The US Geological Survey said the quake happened just before 8pm our time - some 298 kilometers southeast of the capital Lima.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a widespread warning, but cautioned that quakes of this size can cause destructive local tsunamis.
