A student has been shot and injured at a high school in the US, authorities said tonight.

No arrests have been made and no gun has been recovered following the incident at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, officials said.

The school has been placed in lockdown and parents have been told to stay away until the scene is cleared.

Nearby Mac Williams Middle School has also been locked down, with not students allowed in or out.

Sheriff Earl Butler said a female student was shot with what appeared to be a small-calibre bullet.

She has been taken to a nearby hospital.
