Amanda Knox has left Rome aboard a London-bound plane en route to the United States.

She leaves the morning after an Italian appeals court dramatically overturned the American student’s conviction of sexually assaulting and brutally murdering her British room-mate, Meredith Kercher.

The Italy-US Foundation, which has championed her cause, said Knox departed shortly after 10am UK time from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport.

In London, she will catch a connecting flight home to the United States with her family.

The 24-year-old arrived at the airport in a Mercedes with darkened windows and waited for boarding inside a private waiting area, out of public view.
