Australian military breaks down gender barriers

Australia will remove all gender barriers in its military over the next five years, opening up the possibility of controversial front-line combat roles, a minister said today.

The country will follow Canada and New Zealand in allowing women who meet the physical and psychological demands to perform any role they choose, defence minister Stephen Smith said.
