The man tasked with talking up the euro this afternoon insisted that more EU control over the single currency would not mean “substantial” new tax-raising powers for Brussels.

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, on a visit to London for talks with David Cameron, admitted he wanted to see even more single currency controls from Brussels to prevent a repeat of the economic crisis.
