Syria’s security forces are making gains against a five-month-old uprising, President Bashar Assad insisted tonight as he insisted his government was not in danger of falling.

President Assad appeared in an interview on state-run TV – his fourth public appearance since the revolt against his family’s 40-year rule erupted in mid-March.
