Australian police say a four-year-old girl has been killed in her suburban Melbourne home by a neighbour's escaped dog.

Police Superintendent Graham Kent said the pit bull crossbreed entered the home where Ayen Chol was watching TV with other children on and attacked. A five-year-old girl and a 30-year-old woman were also injured, and Ayen died at the scene.

Mr Kent said the dog will be killed and charges are being considered against its owner. Ayen was a Sudanese refugee.
