Syria President 'halts military action against protesters'

Syria's President Bashar Al-Assad has told United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon that he has stopped military operations against protesters.

It comes ahead of a debate in the UN's Security Council on whether Syria should be referred to the International Criminal Court.

It is believed more than 2,000 Syrians have died in the protests, which began five months ago.
