Six killed in Guatemala bar attack

At least six people were killed when attackers armed with guns and grenades raided a bar near Guatemala’s border with Mexico, a Guatemalan governor said today.

Peten Governor Rudiel Alvarez said the gang and some injured victims may have fled across the border. He has asked Mexican authorities to help search for them.

Mr Alvarez said the attack happened last night in the village of Tierra Blanca.

Peten province is an area of jungle and ranches which has seen increasing drug violence, including the massacre of 27 labourers in the village of Los Cocos in May.

Officials said they believe the Zetas cartel carried out that attack.
