Media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s power and influence ensured he was always a welcome visitor at No 10, even if it did mean slipping in through the back door.

Despite days of confusion at Downing Street as the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats embarked on a coalition, Mr Cameron found time to invite him over to No 10 for a cup of tea.
