At least 10 passengers were killed when a Turkish bus hit a road sign, overturned and burst into flames, officials said today.

Governor Dursun Ali Sahin said the victims were trapped inside the vehicle and burned to death. A further 20 passengers suffered burns.

Mr Sahin said some of the passengers are in a serious condition and he fears the death toll could increase.

The bus was travelling from Istanbul to the Black Sea city of Trabzon when it crashed in the province of Giresun, near Istanbul.

Officials are investigating the cause of the accident and why the driver lost control.
