Syrian activists say the military has begun a new artillery attack on a town in the country’s turbulent heartland, killing at least one person.

The Local Co-ordination Committees in Syria, which helps organise and document the country’s protests, said the army and security forces were using heavy machine guns and artillery to attack Rastan.
