Chinese lorry drivers in fuel price protest

Hundreds of lorry drivers are holding a three-day protest against rising fees and fuel prices at China’s busiest port, the latest display of resentment over surging inflation.

A haulage company owner says eight to nine of the lorry drivers who gathered at the Baoshan port were arrested when they tried to overturn a car at the demonstration.

An employee at a logistics company said drivers smashed the windows of lorries belonging to other drivers who refused to take part in the strike.

The drivers gathered again today but there were no reports of any arrests.

The drivers are angry about new fees charged by the private warehouse operators and rising fuel prices, which they say are sharply cutting into their profits.
