Residents in the southern Syrian city of Daraa are holding a sit-in to protest at the killing of more than a dozen people by police, a report says.

An activist, in contact with residents, says the situation is still tense, with a heavy armed presence in the streets.

He said that dozens of people were holding the sit-in in the al-Mahata neighbourhood near the city centre.

Inspired by the wave of pro-democracy protests around the region, Daraa residents have held protests since last week.

On Wednesday, Syrian police launched an assault on a neighbourhood sheltering anti-government protesters leaving 15 people dead.

It was the deadliest day since protests began.
