Sudan president announces intention to step down

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has said he will not stand in the next presidential election in the restive African country.

A party official said the move is part of a package of reforms aimed at democratising Sudan.

Mr al-Bashir has been in power since a coup in 1989.

Members of the ruling party insist the president has not been put under any pressure to make the decision.
