Nine police officers were killed when a suicide attacker detonated a car bomb at a police station in the northern Iraqi city of Samarra, police and hospital officials said today.

Nine police officers were killed when a suicide attacker detonated a car bomb at a police station in the northern Iraqi city of Samarra, police and hospital officials said today.

They said at least 19 other people were injured in the attack.

Samarra has been a flashpoint city ever since a 2006 attack by al Qaida destroyed part of the golden-domed mosque in the city revered by Shiites.
