The US government has taken legal action to demand that Twitter hand over private messages and personal details of people connected with WikiLeaks.

The court document orders the social networking site to divulge messages, billing information, telephone numbers and connection records of accounts run by Julian Assange and his associates.

Mr Assange's London lawyer, Mark Stephens, said the US is desperate to stifle the website.
