French hostages killed in rescue attempt

Two French hostages captured in Niger were killed during a rescue attempt involving French forces, the country’s defence minister said tonight.

A statement from French minister Alain Juppe said the hostages, who have not been identified, were found dead at the Niger-Mali border after a clash with the kidnappers.
