China sets up rival to Nobel Peace Prize

China has set up its own peace prize and plans to award it on Thursday, the day before the Nobel Committee honours an imprisoned Chinese dissident in a move that has enraged Beijing.

Since Liu Xiaobo’s selection for the peace prize, China has vilified the 54-year-old democracy advocate and called the decision to honour him an effort by the West to contain China’s rise.
