Delhi building collapse leads to mass evacuations
Dozens of buildings near the New Delhi apartment block that collapsed killing 67 people were evacuated today.
The destruction of the crude brick five-storey building on Monday shocked the city and highlighted the dangerous housing conditions among the poor in India’s capital.
Officials have arrested the owner and evacuated another of his buildings along with 37 others thought dangerous in Lalita Park.
A city spokesman said: “We have issued them notice to vacate their houses immediately for their safety.”
But those forced to leave their homes said they had nowhere to go. Piles of pillowcases stuffed with clothing, pots, pans and picture frames lined the areas narrow streets today.
