A Nasa research facility near an airport in the US was temporarily locked down today amid fears a gunman was on the loose, but officials later said it had been a false alarm.

The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office said a message was misunderstood while Nasa was conducting a test of its automated emergency notification system at the Glenn Research Centre.
