Greek firefighters clash with police

Riot police in Greece have used tear gas and flash grenades to disperse firefighters protesting outside parliament today amid the financial crisis in the country.

The clashes marked the latest protest staged by public servants on short-term contracts who now face redundancy as the Greek government struggles to slash spending and improve the country’s finances.

Last month, culture ministry contract workers clashed with riot police after blocking the entrance to the Acropolis.

Firefighters have been camped out in tents on the main Syntagma Square, opposite parliament, in Athens for more than a week.
