Suspicious package found at German Chancellery

A suspicious package was today seized at the Chancellery in Berlin, the administrative complex housing the offices of German Chancellor Angel Merkel.

Chancellor Merkel was not in the building at the time.

A spokesman said the package was found in the mail room there and it contained black powder thought to be an explosive material.

The package was reportedly addressed to Chancellor Merkel and carried the return address of the Greek Economics Ministry.

It was delivered by the US-based package delivery company UPS and officials believe that it likely originated in Greece, according to Der Spiegel.

The package was made safe and an investigation is underway.
