Large numbers of Tibetan students staged marches in western China to protest the forced use of Mandarin Chinese in area schools, according to reports.

The London-based group Free Tibet and US broadcaster Radio Free Asia reported that crowds of students numbering anywhere from 1,000 to several thousand marched from school to school in the town of Tongren in Qinghai province.
