Tube station closed by 'smell'
One of the London Underground's busiest stations had to be closed today after ticket office staff noticed a strange smell.
Trains continued to pass through Victoria Underground station but passengers were unable to get on or off at the central London station.
The attendance of police and emergency vehicles led to difficulties for those trying to get on to mainline services at Victoria at the start of the evening rush-hour.
A Transport for London spokeswoman said: “Staff in the temporary London Underground ticket office at street level just outside Victoria national rail station reported a strange smell.
“As a precaution Victoria Underground station was closed at 2pm and all the emergency services were called including the Fire Brigade, ambulances, gas and drain engineers, and pest control officers. Four members of staff felt unwell but were not taken to hospital.
“The smell is still being investigated.”
