Four inmates have been found dead with their throats slashed at a prison in Mexico’s Pacific coast state of Sinaloa.

A spokesman for the Sinaloa state prosecutors’ office said the inmates’ bodies were found dumped in a rubbish container at the prison in Culiacan, the state capital.

Spokesman Martin Gastelum said today the prisoners apparently bled to death.

The bodies were found yesterday. Three of the four had been arrested earlier this month following a gun battle with police, while another was on trial for rape. Another inmate also died yesterday of a drug overdose.

Three other inmates have been killed in the last month at the facility, which is located in a state known as the cradle of some of Mexico’s most powerful drug lords.
