UN prepares resolution to impose sanctions on Iran

A resolution to impose new sanctions on Iran is ready for a vote by the United Nations Security Council, according to a text circulated.

No date has been set for a vote but the US has been pushing for speedy action, possibly this week.

France’s UN ambassador Gerard Araud said a vote was likely in “the very short term”.

The final version of the resolution, obtained by The Associated Press, would ban Iran from pursuing “any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons”, bar Iranian investment in activities such as uranium mining, and prohibit Iran from buying several categories of heavy weapons including attack helicopters and missiles.
