Brown to step down tonight - report

The London Evening Standard newspaper is reporting that Gordon Brown is to stand down as British Prime Minister tonight.

The newspaper adds that talks between Labour and the Liberal Democrats on forming a govenment have fallen apart.

If true, it would pave the way for Conservative leader David Cameron to take up residence in 10, Downing street.

Mr Brown had planned to stay in power until the summer if the Lib-Lab deal were brokered.
