A gunman accused of carrying out the 2007 Mafia shootings known as the Duisburg Massacre went on trial today in Italy.

Giovanni Strangio is accused of gunning down six men linked to the ’Ndrangheta crime syndicate outside a restaurant in the German town.

The killings stemmed from a feud between two rival families and drew international attention to the ’Ndrangheta, which is based in the southern Italian region of Calabria.

Strangio followed the opening of his trial today in the Calabrian town of Locri via video link from a Rome prison in Rome.

The 31-year-old was arrested last year in Amsterdam.
