The embattled Thai Prime Minister declared a state of emergency in Bangkok today in an attempt to restore order after weeks of protests by anti-government demonstrators.

The announcement by Abhisit Vejjajiva came after crowds broke into parliament and senior government officials had to be evacuated by helicopter.
